Self-Discipline: PITS Students show us how ...

As the members of the Faculty members contribute their best with the motivation of management, it is wondrous to see results of their arduous efforts. It is in the behavior of students, as they mature, that the contribution of the teaching community is best realized.

Today, I witnessed an event, not singular, but exemplary of students (of PITS) enforcing self-discipline. During the Project Coordination Hour allotted during the morning session, it was found that a few students ended up creating a bit of a mess on the floor after having had biscuits inside the Tech Lab.

This was immediately noticed, and we asked the students as to who was responsible. Two gentlemen, who had signed up for the terminals near which the biscuit crumbs had fallen took up responsibility, skipped their Lunch, went to the Housekeeping Department, got Mops and cleaning equipment, and gave the lab a thorough clean. In the process, the lunch-break being short, they lost their own opportunity to have Lunch.

While, I do not need to identify these Gentlemen in public, for they are themselves distinguished by their act; I admire them, and write this entry respectfully for their sake, for having taken responsibility collectively for their classmates. I had previously asked a few of their classmates as to who was responsible for buying and provisioning others in the Lab with biscuits, but had received no answers - as their inherent, in-built peer protectionism muted their response.

Finally, those who provisioned the students with biscuits during the Laboratory session on Coordinating Project work also revealed themselves. They also took full responsibility and understood the implication of their action. I hope they also understand the selfless act of two gentlemen who, almost selflessly ensured that the Lab was clean despite my intermittent objection that the initiator resolve the issue.

In so doing, they have risen to the top of the pyramid illustrating Abraham Maslow's "Need Hierarchy Theory" transcending 'Love and Belonging' to 'Self Actualization' which demonstrates the highest levels of maturity.

I tip my hat to those who proved themselves to be better people in this instance and personally recognize them. Their act will hopefully remain documented in our blog for as long as we maintain it. They are proof that enforcement of discipline, being the first stage, finally leads to students learning self-discipline and growing to become better people; ultimately better citizens of the Nation and better humans in Society.

This is a triumph of the moral values that have been imbibed in them over the last several years. Truly, the Staff Members, the empowering Management and our visionary Chairman would feel proud to know that their efforts are now bearing fruit.

  1. If your students behave like gentlemen. they deserve all credit. May the almighty bless all of them. particularly to the two who had the courage to own up and indulge in restitution.
