Project Calendar - Final Year Students

Here is the detailed calendar for final years. The Project work begins from the Week of 5-Dec-2011, all changes will be dynamically visible here. If you would like, you can copy events from this calendar directly onto your own Google Calendar.

Event Calendar 2012

At PITS, during the even semesters, we host a number of events for the students. These events are part of our Institution's calendar. Many are curious as to the exact dates of the events. Here is early information after partial confirmation by the various authorities and Departments.

It is best to be aware of the events scheduled to plan your academics and the year to help you get the maximum from the time you have.

Indian Economy and Education

Attempts at Correlating Indian Education and Economy have always been difficult. The needs of the Industry are increasing in terms of the number of people needed. Too many myths cloud Higher Education creating a fog of uncertainty. This however is the situation of 'needs', while the actual solution available to satisfy true Industrial needs has not equated.

Is it the system of education that is affecting this? Is it the 'Future Shock' that this generation of youngsters are facing that is exposing them to a mass Attention Deficit situation? Is the cultural shift in India in a critical phase of transition where parents still support their children who have grown up enough to support themselves, thereby stalling the transition to self-driven, self-supporting individuals? The questions we could ask are innumerable.

Robotics for you

At PITS the "Tech Cell", through "Tech Brigade" brings you opportunities to work on projects all through the calendar year. We also help you work on Robotics and achieve what you previously had never thought was possible.

Min7 designed by Ng Bent Kiat
Now, we have also started advisories and instructions to final year students who are about to participate in projects on 'processes', Project Planning, Project Tracking and Execution akin to a professional firm.

"Ng and Min7 won this year due to the speed of the robot, which has to be seen to be believed. It managed to navigate the maze in just 3.921 seconds, which is also a record. Check out the video below to see just how fast Min7 is."

For all the geeks out there, this is probably one sweet news to digest and tough challenge in creating a faster Micromouse for solving mazes faster than ever before.

Website Review of the Day

For those who enjoy designing, building and publishing websites, which exhibit aesthetics and utility, here's today's "Website review of the day!"

Build your Vocabulary: Series (4)

Humor itself is distinguishable into multiple types, you ought to look them up.

One of the few things lacking in our present group of students who aspire to be ardent speakers of the English Language is the ability to add emotion to their conversation. In my opinion, of all emotions that can be expressed, humor is the one emotion that can elicit multiple emotions from those who listen.

If you are someone who would try and employ humor to render your conversations multifaceted, here is an understanding of humor in the literary sense that I find useful.

How many types of humor exist, five (5), ten (10), fifteen (15) ... or more?

The curious may read on ...

1. Anecdotal: Named after the word anecdote (which stems from the Greek term meaning “unpublished”); refers to comic personal stories that may be true or partly true but embellished.

Placement Cell: for Women Technology Leaders ...

Jane Silber, delivering the keynote at "Ubuntu Live"
If you were wondering whether women are in Core Engineering and Technology Jobs, the answer is a big 'YES'. If you want to know whether they could transition from their core Engineering jobs to Management and Executive jobs, that too is a 'YES'. Examples are all around us, but here is one with a lot more insight. If you are using "Ubuntu", then there is a connection. For those who are wondering, "Canonical" is the company who make 'Ubuntu Linux' among a host of other Open Source Computing solutions.

Blog Post from Canonical ...

On Saturday, November 12th, we welcomed Canonical CEO Jane Silber to the Ubuntu Women Career Days to give us an overview of her career in tech from her beginnings as a Software Developer to her current role as CEO.

The US Dollar hits a high, relatively the Indian Rupee hits a low - Fuel prices hit a high, Government scrambles on taxation policies.

What happened to the IT Industry as a consequence of all this?

Read Madhavan Narayanan's column which puts all this in perspective. This environment has slowly rendered the Indian IT Industry stronger !

Here's an excerpt from the column:
A flurry of news on the information technology  and IT-enabled services industry over the past weeks has put the spotlight back on India’s hottest sector and the indication seems to be that a good part of the challenges it faced over the past couple of years may be over.

First, Tata  Consultancy Services (TCS), the country’s top software service exporter, announced its second biggest outsourcing contract worth $2.2 billion (Rs 11,076 crore) from UK-based pension firm Friends Life

Build your Vocabulary - Series (3)

Here's content from a book you must read. "Word Power made Easy" by Norman Lewis.

Words on Talking, Talking and Talking

Loquacious people love to talk. this adjective is not necessarily a put-down, but the implication, when you so characterize such people, is that you wish they would pause for breath once in a while so that you can get your licks in. The noun is loquacity or loquaciousness.

The word derives from loquor, which means 'to speak', from Latin.

1. Soliloquy - a speech to oneself or etymologically, a speech when alone.
We often talk to ourselves, but usually silently, the words going through our minds but not actually passing our lips. The term soliloquy is commonly applied to utterances made in a play by characters who are speaking their thoughts aloud so the audience won't have to guess. The soliloquist may be alone; or other members of the cast may be present on stage, but of course they don't hear what's being said, because they're not supposed to know. Eugene O'Neill made novel uses of soliloquies in Mourning Becomes Electra - the characters made honest disclosures of their feelings and thoughts to the audience, but kept the other players in the dark.
The verb is to soliloquize

2. A ventriloquist is one who can throw his voice. A listener thinks the sound is coming from some source other than the person speaking. The combining root is Latin venier, ventris; belly; etymologically ventriloquism is the art of "speaking from the belly." The adjective is ventriloquistic. Can you figure out how the verb will end?

3. Colloquial combines loquor, to speak, with the prefix con-. (Con- is spelled col- before a root starting with l; cor- before a root starting with r; com- before a root starting with m, p or b.) When people speak together they are engaging in Conversation and their language is usually more informal and less rigidly grammatical than what you might expect in writing or in public addresses. Colloquial patterns are perfectly correct -- they are simply informal, and suitable to everyday conversation.

A colloquialism, therefore is a conversation-style expression, like "He hasn't got any" or "Who are you going with?" as contrasted to the formal or literary "He has none" or "With whom are you going?" Colloquial English is the English you and I talk on everyday occasions - it is not slangy, vulgar or illiterate.

4. A circumlocuation is, etymologically, a "talk around" (circum-, around). Any way of expressing an idea that is roundabout or, indirect is circumlocutory -- you are now familiar with the common adjective suffix -ory.

Everyone preparing for their G.R.E. and any examination which requires improving vocabulary ought to read "Word Power Made Easy" by Norman Lewis -- before you start using flashcards, as the fundamentals behind words and how to understand them is taught effectively.
